U.S. President Trump approved a two-year exemption for domestic copper smelters from new Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) emission standards on Friday.

The measure temporarily suspends the "Copper Rule," which includes new emission control requirements and applies to Freeport-McMoRan's (FCX.US) smelter located in Miami, Arizona. Trump emphasized that fixed sources granted the exemption will still comply with the applicable emission standards and compliance obligations prior to the Copper Rule.

The Environmental Protection Agency is expected to reassess the impact of the rule before the exemption period ends in 2027
